Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964) added to Playlist on my Mystik Nexus on YouTube* http://youtube.com/c/stevendarkxyz
An excellent oddity of British cinema from the talented Production/Acting partnership of Bryan Forbes and Richard Attenborough . Attenborough is the down at heel and nervously mousy husband of a professional psychic and medium (Kim Stanley) who has hatched a plot to kidnap the young daughter of a rich industrialist in order that she can then ‘help’ the distraught parents Mark Eden and Nanette Newman – Director Bryan Forbes real life wife).
Particularly notable is the scene in which Attenborough’s asthmatic and nervy character races around busy Piccadilly and Leicester Square Tube Stations via telephone boxes to collect the ransom money while avoiding the undercover police presence.
Sensitively directed, creatively shot and beautifully underplayed by all to the unnerving and incongruent almost dissonant in context., background of Mendehlsohn’s ‘Hear My Prayer’, this is an intelligent and darkly atmospheric thriller with a quiet edginess verging on but not quite chilling which makes it all the more sinister.
Thoroughly recommended for viewing on a cloudy and wet afternoon. 🙂
