1948 and all that …
A few years back I postulated that domestic digital gadgets would be increasingly used to encroach upon our privacy.
When George Orwell wrote 1984 he originally titled it 1948. It was his vision of a Post-War (WWII) dystopian society ruled by a fascist-like totalitarian state, in other words what he envisaged the world would be like under the domination of Hitler and the Nazis. His publishers baulked and insisted on a change of title – hence 1984. Orwell was not writing about a distant future but a very possible 1948.
1948! 67 years ago. Imagine the horror of Orwell’s nightmare vision of society here and now given the enormous advances in technology during those 67 years
Mobile phone technology, Google Maps, GPS, FB GeoTargetting ad nauseum means that the location of any individual can be pin-pointed to within a few metres.
Innumerable surveillance and security cameras watch and track our every movement from home to work, in work, and back again … and then, and THEN our state of the art HD digital TV is spying on us.
Oh what a bloody surprise!
… and on a side note … given that 95% of TV is soporific shite why anyone wants to watch it, let alone on a wall-sized screen in digital HD, is beyond me.
Just excuse me while I turn on the wireless … it takes a few moments for the tubes to warm up.
